Abstract: Measurement of the current density distribution is necessary to monitor the magnetic stresses that exist at the photosphere. The availability of vector magnetic fields at a given height of the solar atmosphere has hitherto provided only the vertical component of the current density. The distribution of this component of the current density is discussed for a variety of active regions. The distribution within emerging flux regions is seen to be different from that within fully emerged sunspots. The further decomposition of the vertical current density into the shear and twist components shows some interesting relationships between the signs of the twist and shear currents. The physical implications of these relationships are discussed.
